He sat in for Jackson's recording sessions of his studio album Bad. Bubbles regularly appeared in images of Jackson in the late 1980s and was later mocked by the public. By coating the sculpture in gold paint, Koons displays the role of Jackson as a pop icon and cultural fetish object, including Bubbles in a matching military jacket.
